stusha studio is an art and design practice, based in a studio somewhere on Newcastle Street, Perth, Western Australia. Finally, Andrew has got his site up and is sharing a small taste of some of his finest public art and design work.

Amazingly process driven and passionate story-teller, Andrew is arguably one of Australia’s best working public artists and solo-designers and always up for a coffee and a chat.

metaMORPHosis was the new art and design exhibition for senior secondary school students being presented by Central Institute of Technology this year. The exhibition was developed to acknowledge and promote the excellence and originality achieved by senior secondary school students in their art and design studies. Central also sees the exhibition as a complement to our prestigious art and design programs and as a reflection on the shift (or metaMORPHosis) from student to artist/designer.

I spoke at the event and awarded prizes to 12 students. Below is the short speech I gave prior to the handing out of certificates.

Central’s Advanced Diploma graduating Graphic Design students were treated to a comprehensive and well developed presentation by Astrid Fackelmann of HiLighter this week. Astrid layed out the process and starting point of well considered portfolio and CV development and explained the benefits of setting ongoing workplace goals that speak volumes about the graduating student’s personality and direction.

Data and research from Perth’s small and challenging small design studio base was examined as was design personality types and the importance of professional networks like AGDA WA, contact with mentors, surrounding yourself with talented peers (potential team creation like that of tonne gramme) and of course, giving back to non-profit organisations as frequently as possible and documenting the results (I use Goodcompany).

I took some notes to share and some pics of the grad group.

Stephen Castledine, Perth’s favourite award-winning artist and graphic designer, who has been working in the design industry in WA for over 27 years and the talented, Isabel Kruger, named PADC’s ‘Designer of the Year 2009′, who has worked in boutique design studios in Hamburg, Munich, Sydney and Perth gave a fantastically concise, entertaining and honest talk today at Central Institute of Technology.

Isabel’s final comments towards the end of the session (regarding mining jobs vs graphic design jobs and associated pay scale) was resonate and sincere. I hope if students think of anything from today, it is that “quality” aesthetic and genuine love, passion, skill and intuition are essentially the key ingredients needed for a long, worthwhile design career and a life well lived.

Had a great evening listening to the inspiration words, thinking and process of Blair Enns at the Oxford Hotel in Perth last night.

Blair’s book is actually available for free online here, so if you have a moment, you should certainly take a look. The reviews are glowing and the logic is unquestionable.

Sean Mckay took some great snaps of the evening, capturing the space and atmosphere perfectly.

After two amazing talks by Steve Castledine and Scott Weir, the WA School of Art Design and Media have drawn their folio week to a close.

In the gallery are some highlights from Steve’s talk and a few of the walls after Week 15 assessment.

Both spoke excellently about how to bridge the gap between a ‘student folio and professional folio‘ and Steve spoke at length about his long career and life, design and happiness immersed in Perth Graphic Design culture.

We have been fortunate at Central TAFE to have Carol Seidel talk to the Bundled 09 grad group about her approach to exhibitions, sponsorships, persistence and dealing with knock backs and complications when it comes to organising an exhibition.

This facinating short talk started when she was visiting the world. She seemed to have liked Mexico the most because it reminded her of her childhood not going into too much detail here but she stated taking some photos of the people growing up there and how they get along with their lives. After taking so many photos she decided to make an exhibition and the real challenge started as she would have to go about finding sponsors her determination and confidence got her through the worst. – Student

A great little interview with the master:

Paul Rand. 1914-1996. This six-minute amateur video footage of Paul chatting with some design students offers an insight into the man I hadn’t seen. At the time of writing there are just 233 views on YouTube. A tiny amount considering his reputation in design circles.

Worth your time. The video corrects a mistake I made when attributing this quote to Rand:

“Don’t try to be original. Just try to be good.”
