The Central TAFE web develop class are working towards a Friday pitch deadline. Finally the photography and select tonal images (the closeups) have come through for inclusion. We are still waiting on the final logo.

Full catalogue now available

Behind these Walls was a chance for all ART, DESIGN & MEDIA STUDENTS to decorate Central TAFE’s upstairs ‘Boardroom’ at 19 Aberdeen Street.

We are now selling off these large panels of amazing work by Expression of Interest.

Included in the catalogue are two works produced by internationally renowned artists, Ben Frost (Sydney) and Amy Sol (San Francisco). The split panels and the video of them creating these cut, paste ‘found object’ pieces can be viewed online at YouTube.

State Library of Western Australia rebranding

In April 2008, The State Library of Western Australia invited Perth Central TAFE graphic design students to enter a competition focused on their complete rebranding. Over 30 students received the detailed brief, stipulating such mandatories as the device should not refer to books, cliched Library services or the architecture of the building. Initial proposals were shortlisted and finialists were given extra time to develop and further refine stationery set, website design, interior signage and examples of promotional material.

For the final presentation, most of the COPORATE BRANDING and CORP ID students were present (both Diploma and Adv. Diploma students), Bill Atkinson (LPM), senior lecturer Jeremy Williams and Julie Zappa (Head) and from the State Library Margaret Allen (Chief Executive Officer and State Librarian) and Doug George (Manager Public Programs) and Dana Tonello (Display and Publications Officer, Public Programs).

Photos show the winning logo and Adv. Diploma winning designer, Carole Lee Mcphail with her prize (an amazing MacBook Pro 17″ Laptop and Entire Adobe Creative Suite software)

Central TAFE was also presented with a MacBook Pro Laptop which will be used during student placement for their work experience to help them enter the industry.

LP Cover Design

Gutter Guitar

Recently finished a LP Album Cover for Gutter Guitar.

After listening to Pex’s experimental / thrash / jazz, I figured this would provide a visual interpretation to his connection with ‘white noise’.

Gutter Guitar is Predrag Delibasich on guitar and nothing else. Except a couple of effect pedals and an amplifier. Predrag, also known as Pex, played guitar in Sokkol and Soviet Valves, played bass for Airport City Shuffle and currently plays bass in Bamodi and Abe Sada, not to mentioned his solo-bass act Bassta! Pex (sometimes Bassta! Pex Orchestra, huh…). Gutter Guitar started in September 2007 when Pex discovered some beautiful noise coming out of his cheap practice amp while he mucked around with his guitar. The first recording Rat Saviour was done in one take, with no preparation at all - just plug in, switch on and record. More recordings were done early January 2008.

Art Education Association re-branded

The Art Education Association of WA has gone through a recent logo and branding redesign in collaboration with students from Central TAFE.

The challenge of redesigning a new logo was given to a class of CORPORATE BRANDING Diploma and Advanced Diploma graphic design students who proposed over 40 logo ideas.

The brief was open to interpretation and the standard of entries was high and very competitive, with quality control provided by lecturer, Brendan Hibbert. Shortlisting the final entrants resulted in a great deal of deliberation. Members agreed that a new logo should reflect the core business of all sectors, including primary and secondary.

The initial designs submitted were considered by committee members and narrowed down to three competitive finalists — Annie Chuah, Kath Gibson and Jo Kolb. Each finalist was given specific feedback on their design proposal and were given the opportunity to refine their design ideas further. Jo refined her logo using “watered down acrylic paint” forming the shape of WA and ultimately strengthening the branding identity.

The redesign and rebranding sets a new and vibrant direction for the Art Education Association. It truly reflects our work as art teachers, is fresh, spontaneous and playful. It is a strong logo that leaves a good impression. Visually, it has put the ‘art’ back into art education.

The logo will be used to positively and professionally promote the fabulous work of all involved in art education. The timing of the Art Education Association rebrand and new logo coincides with a number of broader educational changes, including the accreditation and introduction of the new senior secondary courses.

The new logo was developed on a very small budget, but the results have been extraordinary. The logo will roll-out onto all Art Education Association materials and communications, including a new look journal and website.
