24 Sep From Molecules to Movable Type, Diana Azzam residency celebrated with dual donation
Diana Azzam’s artist residency at North Metropolitan TAFE’s Perth Letterpress Workshop was a compelling fusion of science and traditional printing techniques.
A scientist, cell and molecular biologist, Diana Azzam brought a unique lens to the world of letterpress, exploring the concept of contronyms {words with opposing meanings} as a metaphor for conflict, duality, and interpretation.
Her approach was both methodical and experimental. Using the physicality of letterpress blocks and mixed media, she transformed abstract ideas into tactile experiences. Words like “Strike,” “Oversight,” and “Refrain” became visual puzzles, prompting viewers to consider how language shapes perception. The residency culminated in a thought-provoking exhibition that challenged audiences to navigate multiple truths, echoing the complexity of both scientific inquiry and human experience.
Diana has also donated two of her works to the NMTAFE permanent collection, pictured right between Brendan Hibbert and Collections Manager, Gina Capes.
