31 Jul Permission to Play
ON SHOW NOW — 31 July – 20 August 2024
JANICE LAW
LETTERPRESS ARTIST IN RESIDENCE 2024
Janice’s exhibition is now open to share the work she has been creating at the Perth Letterpress Artist in Residency. There’s no opening night but feel free to pop in anytime during the dates (weekdays).
Janice writes:
There’s a lot to be gained from setting yourself free from a brief, and just having fun. There’s nothing at risk. No one needs to see the outcome. To immerse yourself in something you just enjoy doing, for the sake of fun.
Protecting time and space for play and experimentation is imperative to a creative life. It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of work and life, but that affects the art. We end up relying on what we know and have done in the past.
One of my favourite pieces that has come out of the Perth Letterpress Artist in Residency is Play as Work, Work as Play. The artwork can be rotated 180° depending on your preferred point of view.
In this ever-increasing, fast-paced world, Janice Law invites you to slow down, and make time for play. Play welcomes risks, new experiments and spontaneity. It takes out expectations and provides a sense of freedom. These artworks were created slowly on vintage letterpresses, embracing the time we have now and the freedom of play.
