08 Aug Young Originals 2024 — A farewell
Young Originals is a fantastic, well oiled machine.
A few shots below from the opening and a bit of text from Melissa (who gave a terrific address to a packed ECU Spectrum Gallery)
A total of 218 entries were received this year from city and country schools. This is a testament to our dedicated visual arts teachers. The judges were hard pressed to select the finalists, with 82 pieces eventually chosen for display. Viewers of the online gallery can find each piece, filter by school, enlarge images and read artist statements where students reflect on their creative intentions and influences.
I would like to acknowledge the work of the Young Originals organising committee and other contributors: Cassie Bussell, Karen Lamond and Angela Melia from the Department of Education; graphic designer and TAFE lecturer, Brendan Hibbert; collage artist, Shay Azzari; Alix Beattie, Lyndall Adams and the installation team at ECU Galleries; Sue Starcken, ECU art collection curator and lecturer; Robyn Rochat, design teacher, and Donna Franklin, artist and educator.
Sadly, this was Cassie’s final YO.
